CP Group in Talks to Import Chery Cars

BANGKOK, Thailand -
Thailand's agribusiness conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Group said Wednesday it is in discussions with a local partner and China's Chery Automobile Co. Ltd. and may join a venture to assemble the Chinese cars locally.
The plan has not been finalized and is still in negotiations, said Suthana Hongthong, manager of corporate communications for CP Group, who could not provide additional details. An official announcement could come early next year, she said.
The plan would team the CP Group with local partner Yontrakit Group and Chery in an investment of at least 1 billion Thai baht (US$32 million; euro22 million), the Bangkok Post reported, citing Thanakorn Seriburi, vice chairman of CP Group.
The proposed joint venture assembly plant would have an initial capacity of 4,000-5,000 vehicles, according to the Post and the Nation. Production would be aimed at both domestic and regional markets, Suthana said.
Imports from Indonesia might be a first step to opening up the Thai market prior to setting up an assembly plant, said Suthana. CP Group had earlier said it would look at importing Chery cars made in Indonesia for distribution in Thailand.
"The plan has grown from there," she said. Executives from all of the potential partners will meet at an industry show before the end of the year to discuss the joint venture plans, she said.
Chery, based in the eastern city of Wuhu in Anhui province, is China's biggest domestic automaker and has domestic manufacturing tie-ups with Chrysler Group of the U.S. and Italy's Fiat (nyse: FIA - news - people ) Group.
The Chinese automaker also assembles vehicles with partners in Russia, Ukraine, Egypt, Uruguay and Indonesia.

KALININGRAD, November 15 (Itar-Tass) - Russia’s car plant Avtotor and China’s biggest car maker Chery plan to build an automobile plant in 2009, Avtotor director-general Valery Gorbunov told journalists on Thursday.
The yet-to-be-plant is expected to manufacture 200,000-250,000 cars a year, Avtotor’s board chairman Valery Shcherbakov said.
The plant is expected to export 50,000 of the produced cars.
The two parties will set up the joint venture on a parity basis.
Shcherbakov pointed out that the construction of such plant is impossible without support of the Russian government.
The Chinese government has already approved the project, he said.
At present, Avtotor assembles three brands of China’s Chery – Tiggo, Amulet and A21, the Prime-Tass business news agency said.

Chery’s flight plan
CHERY is literally taking its customers to the air as the Chinese car manufacturer launches its first Christmas marketing campaign in the country.
To move the 500 various models it imported for the holiday season, Chery is giving away one free round-trip airline ticket to Shanghai from Manila for every buyer of a Chery car, van or sports utility vehicle.
The free trip includes a complimentary four-night stay in a four-star hotel, including a guided tour to Chery’s manufacturing plant in the Shanghai suburb of Wuhu.
According to Chery Philippine spokesman Bosco Cheung, the car manufacturer has already blocked off a number of Philippine Airlines seats between Dec.15-20 for the first expected batch of buyers-travelers.
Priced to undercut the Japanese and Korean competition, Chery retails for as low as P319,000 for the entry-level, QQ3, a compact hatchback already equipped with an antilock brake systems, dual front airbags, power windows, and a Euro III compliant engine.
Despite being the newest kid in the automotive block, Chery has already scheduled a series of launches until the first quarter of next year for the other market segments, including the Crossover (V5), a 2.0-liter, seven-seater multipurpose vehicle (P858,000); the Cowin, a sedan powered by an LPG/gasoline engine (P479,000); the Tiggo, a 1.6-liter sport utility vehicle (P728,000); and the A5, a 1.6-liter sedan (P589,000).

Chery plans to mass produce hybrid vehicles by 2010
Shanghai. November 15 (Gasgoo.com) - By 2010 half of Chery-made vehicles will be hybrid and 20 percent of Chery-made vehicles will be powered by new energy, an official from Chery said at an international forum on renewable energy held in Beijing, China's Securities Journal reported today.
"New energy is a driving force for the sustainable development of auto industry, by 2010 more than fifty percent vehicles produced by Chery will be equipped with hybrid systems, and half of those vehicles will be powered by new energy," said Liu Zhijia, an engineer with the National Research Center for Clean Vehicles and Assistant General Manager of Chery Automobile Company, during the forum, which was organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Development and Reform Commission earlier this week.
He said Chery's development plan for the hybrid technologies can be outlined in the following three phases: Firstly, to start production of mild hybrid sedans by 2008, which are expected to reduce emissions of Chery vehicles by 10% to 30%; secondly, to develop and mass produce full hybrid vehicles and electric/alcohol vehicles by 2010 when Chery will sell half of its vehicles powered by hybrid engine; and lastly to develop hydrogen fuel cell vehicles by 2015.
Also at the forum, vice-minister for science and technology Cao Jianlin said the government will provide additional funding for research projects and offer preferential tax rates for those involved in the development and use of renewable energy, as part of its development plan for renewable energy launched in June.
The plan aims to increase the proportion of renewable energy to 10 percent of total consumption by 2010, and to 16 percent by 2020, Cao said. It currently accounts for just 1 percent.
He said the energy policy will give priority support to five fields - solar power, biomass fuels, wind power, hydrogen energy and natural gas utilization.

Nascent-market focus keeps Chery from U.S.

Chinese automaker Chery Automobile has no immediate plans to enter the U.S. market, a company official said yesterday.
"We don't have a definite timetable yet," general manager Dr. Lin Zhang told a seminar in Birmingham, Mich. "... Until we are ready, we won't come to the U.S. market."
Chery signed a deal with Cerberus Capital Management affiliate Chrysler LLC in July to develop, manufacture and distribute Chery-made small cars in North America. But Zhang said Chery is committed to exporting to developing markets before the U.S. and Europe. Chery expects to export 110,000 vehicles this year, mostly to the Middle East and Russia.

Chinese automaker Chery is ready to move into the country, but at their own pace. You can't rush it. It'll happen. They promise. Speaking at a J.D. Power and Associates forum, Chery General Manager Lin Zhang said "To be honest, we don't have a definite timetable yet for entering the U.S. Market." The plan is to have Chrysler sell the cars as Dodge/Chryselr branded vehicles at a price maybe below $10,000.
Zhang also mentioned the Hornet, which is a rumor we've reported on before and now seems to have a bit more support. Either way, it looks like it'll happen but we just don't know how, when or necessarily what.
